Singapore Air Show 2008

We had an awesome time at the Air Show yesterday. Because I bought tickets late and couldn’t get a car park label to drive in, and cos there were 7 of us and a wheelchair, we decided to book a maxicab. Turned out to be one of many great decisions we made.

We got there around 10am, slathered up on sunscreen and walked the static displays first. Amidst complainings of “so hot” and “can we go into the aircon?” I was adamant that we finish up the outdoor stuff before noon.

Queued up for about 40mins to sit inside the Chinook for all of 2 mins. We had to tell the guys manning the exit downramp of the Chinook that no, it wasn’t ok for them to be letting people up “just for one photo from the outside”. What were we queueing up for then?? For the same opportunity la! Walau. We felt that they should have just said, “Photo? Can. Please join the queue that snakes all the way around and takes 40mins. Thanks for understanding.” Bah. Left a bad taste in the mouth.

Otherwise it was fun being that close to the planes. We got bored pretty quickly though.

And my very clever and generous Joe, booked us a table for lunch so that we could watch the Aerobatics in aircon comfort. Next best decision. It was expensive, the food wasn’t great but the desserts were alright. The drinks were free-flowing and refreshing, and the view was incredible and more than made up for everything. There even was a deck outside that we could go out on when we wanted to hear commentary and get a real tummy-rumbling of the flights that were spectacularly close.

Checked out the indoor exhibitions, and made our way to the taxi stand. Where we had booked the same maxicab to take us home. Last best decision. It took us a whole lot of winding and maneuvering to get to the stand, but we made it 5 mins late. Good thing the driver was stuck in the traffic jam coming in.

The Air Show grounds were definitely NOT wheelchair friendly. Too much gravel and uncovered lumpy ground to go over. Good thing Jordan still has the option to walk instead of having to endure a rough and bumpy ride while in danger of being bounced off. Although I think he quite likes it :)

The only lift they had to the 2nd floor restaurant was being held open on the top so as to prevent people from misusing it. It was hard to gain access to it even though we obviously needed to use it. They kept passing the buck, from restaurant, to management of the building.

And then when we were done and needed to leave, the damn thing was spoilt. No one offered any other solutions. The guy half-heartedly offered someone to help me but when I turned around, there was no one following us to help. Good thing we still have no problems walking down ourselves for now, but I had to ask for someone to carry the chair down for me.

Bah. A taste of things to come.

Here are photos.
